Analysis
The dreaded word! I don't think in all my years teaching GCSE photography I have encountered a group of students that enjoy writing analysis! perhaps the odd student now and again will express some mild enthusiasm but the majority find it tiresome and difficult.
I believe the word itself is the culprit in evoking these feelings in you and what you perceive as analysis is probably wrong or a very complicated version of what it actually is.
So whats the point in analysis?
I will admit to you that as a filmmaker and a photographer, I don't spend my days analysing images and films before each of my productions. I do however make scrapbooks (usually digital) which I populate with images and video and often annotate around the images at a very basic level. This helps me to make a plan and generally just know what I'm doing next.
So why do you have to? it's quite simple really! your qualification (the GCSE) is made up of four very broad and very important assessment criteria, one of them being to show your ability to critically evaluate other artists and your own work. You need to learn how to do this to a high standard initially, and then later on, if you do pursue photography you may use it as you wish, either at a basic level or higher. Before artists begin the practical element of big projects they usually embark on masses of research, and for photographers this could be lots of analysis.
The more you analyse photography, the more you identify techniques, motivations, concepts, visual language etc, the more you can apply this to your own work.

To the left you can see the assessment criteria, there is alot more to each one but in order to understand them I have simplified them into checklists. As you can see, analysis falls into all of them in one way or another! whether that be in the form of evaluating your own or an artists work, or simply reflecting on your processes.
So it's not just me inventing the analysis criteria guys..... ! |
Task 1
Create a new page on your Weebly site and title it 'Analysis' (or use PowerPoint)
READ CAREFULLY PLEASE!
Ok, so you can download the two PowerPoint templates (I will provide them below). Use them if you wish, and then you can upload your PowerPoint to Weebly. OR you can do the analysis directly into Weebly. You must still use the templates I have provided as structure and try and answer as many questions as possible.
